Multi-bunch Energy Compensation*
نویسنده
چکیده
To obtain a luminosity of 1034cm-2sec-’ in a TeV Linear Collider (TLC), it will probably be necessary to accelerate many bunches in one filling of the RF structure. This has the effect of extracting more energy from the structure and thus enhances the overall efficiency of the accelerator. However, this leads to many problems. First, the train of bunches is subject to cumulative beam breakup transversely. This can be controlled by damping the transverse modes with slots in lY2 !he irises coupled to waveguides. In addition, the energy of the bunches must be. kept the same to high precision. For the fundamental mode, this entails adjusting the timing of the RF fill and also the bunch spacing. The higher longitudinal modes, although they do not induce instability, also may lead to bunch-to-bunch variations in energy. However, it also seems possible to damp these modes to cure this problem.’ Of course, there are also problems associated with damping a train of bunches in a damping ring.

Beam Loading Compensation in the Main Linac of Clic
Compensation of multi-bunch beam loading is of great importance in the main linac of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC). The bunch-to-bunch energy variation has to stay below 1 part in 10. In CLIC, the RF power is obtained by decelerating a drive beam which is formed by merging a number of short bunch trains. A promising scheme for tackling beam loading in the main linac is based on varying the...
متن کاملTWO-FREQUENCY BEAM-LOADING COMPENSATION in the DRIVE- BEAM ACCELERATOR of the CLIC TEST FACILITY
The CLIC Test Facility (CTF) is a prototype two-beam accelerator, in which a high-current “drive beam” is used to generate the RF power for the main-beam accelerator. The drive-beam accelerator consists of two S-band structures which accelerate a bunch train with a total charge of 500 nC. The substantial beam loading is compensated by operating the two accelerating structures at 7.81 MHz above ...
متن کاملSimulation and Compensation of Multibunch Energy Variation in NLC*
The SLAC NLC design for a next-generation linear collider utilizes multibunching (acceleration of a train of bunches on each RF fill) to increase the luminosity and energy efficiency. It is necessary to control the energy spread of the beam, in order to minimize chromatic emittance dilution and be within the energy acceptance of the final focus. It is anticipated that the NLC may run with bunch...
متن کاملReducing Energy Spread for Long Bunch Train at SLAC
The normal energy gain of the SLC RF system, using SLED (SLAC Energy Development) cavities, can accelerate only about 150 ns beam pulse within an energy spread of 0.5 % with 1011 particles per pulse. By applying two additional 180o phase inversions for about 20 % of all SLC klystrons, the classical SLED pulse is flattened to achieve an energy spread of 0.5 % over 240 ns which corresponds to 680...
متن کاملBeam Loading Compensation for the Low Frequency Linacs and Compressors in the Nlc
The low frequency rf linacs and bunch compressors in the NLC are heavily loaded by beam currents up to 0.9 A. Beam loading generates bunch-to-bunch energy deviations, which need to be compensated to operate with long bunch trains in the linear collider. There are two basic compensation techniques, namely T and F schemes. The F scheme is operationally straightforward but requires additional rf s...
